“I am proud to announce I am a Mom!”

Becoming a mother can be full of emotions. It is exciting, stressful, and nerve-wracking all at once. Becoming a mother adds a whole new level of appreciation for life and experiencing someone that is fully dependent on you. Your child will look up to you for the rest of your life; the number one goal of any parent is to give their child a better life than what they experienced.

For Washington D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser, she is experiencing motherhood up close and personal. She just announced through twitter and a press release that she became a mother through adoption.

She discusses how excited, thrilled, and nervous she is about this next milestone in her life. Bowser started the adoption process towards the end of 2017, and is surprised and thrilled how the process progressed quicker than she expected. Her tweet stated, “it is with great joy and excitement that I share with you that late last year, I decided to begin the adoption journey. I was not sure how long it would take, and to my delight, it advanced much sooner than I expected. So today, I am proud to announce that I am a mom!”

It is wonderful she is using her platform to share awareness about adoption. Domestic and International Adoptions do not always receive the most positive news, and many people do not fully understand adoption. That is why it is so valuable when people like Bowser share their story.

Motherhood is something that should not be taken for granted. That is why Bowser is taking a week off from her duties to commit time to bonding with her child. Becoming a mother through adoption comes with different experiences and challenges; that initial bonding and attachment time is extremely important. Motherhood is a title that should be valued, appreciated, and is something worth celebrating every day.
