Although Mike Peterson didn’t feel, at first, a great pull to adopt, or even a desire for more children, when his wife, Jen, showed him pictures of two biological cousins who would be separated if not adopted together, his heart felt the pull.
An interesting statement that Mike makes in this video is that although leaving an orphanage for a forever family is exciting and what the children want, it is also sad. There is a transition process. Often that process is long — especially when there have been a lot of years. Trust has been lost. Sometimes love has never been felt. It takes work on the part of the parents and the children to develop that love and trust. When there are other children in the family at the time of adoption, the adjustment bleeds over to them as well. But that is what family is about: risk, trust, and love.
