Generally, it’s a lack of knowledge and information that creates fears about open adoption. Some think that when there is communication between adoptive and birth parents, the risk is greater that the adoptee will be reclaimed by the birth parents. But this panel of adoptive parents disputes that fear. Their experiences are that birth parents would not be placing their children for adoption, only to take them back again. Additionally, if that were to happen, open adoption as opposed to closed adoption can be “safer.” Healing takes place and seeing how well their child is being loved can help birth parents feel satisfied with their decision to place.
