In New York city, a special group of consultants have been hired to find ways to speed up the adoption-through-foster-care process. While many families in the city and throughout the state of New York are spending tens of thousands of dollars to adopt internationally, New York’s foster children are being left behind.
In desperate want and need of homes, both foster and adoptive, there is great concern among the Administration for Children’s Services. In the first third of last year there were 339 foster care adoptions. This year, only 266. That’s an alarming 22% decrease. In addition to fewer adoptions, there is an increase in the number of children entering foster care.
New York ranks very low in foster care performance, and Councilman Steve Levin, who is the chair of the General Welfare committee, says it’s time to turn that around. This year there is an increase in the number of children available for adoption foster care. Well over 1,000 children are hoping for forever homes.
