Mariela from Bulgaria
Mariela was born in May 2003. She is in good health with a diagnosis of mild cognitive delay.
Mariela is a social, caring girl who expresses her own emotions and recognizes others’ feelings. She loves receiving praise and persistently seeks attention and approval from familiar adults. She has formed an attachment to her favorite caregiver, is respectful and obedient, and readily follows the daily routine at the orphanage. Mariela shows good concentration and sustainability of attention and has a well-developed short and long-term memory.
Mariela strives to participate in conversations despite difficulties with pronunciation and sentence structure and poor vocabulary. She is working with a speech therapist to overcome these limitations. Mariela seeks peer interactions but struggles to establish connections and to maintain friendships. She often imitates others’ behavior and is easily manipulated. Mariela is in 8th grade in the 2017/2018 school year where due to academic gaps she works with a resource teacher. She can write her name, count to 20, read simple words, and perform basic addition and subtraction. While she enjoys school and attends regularly, Mariela admits to having trouble finding the motivation to study. The support and guidance of loving parents would go a long way toward helping her achieve her potential.
Mariela independently bathes, eats, dresses and undresses. She enjoys being outside, listening to music, playing on the computer, coloring, and styling hair, and shows great imagination in the latter two pursuits.
When asked by our in-country representative about whether she wants to be adopted by loving parents who would care for and support her, she answered, “Yes and that would be enough for me.”
