The Attachment & Bonding Center of Ohio has created this video sharing the pre-adoptive expectations some may have, as well as the adoption experience from all perspectives.
Many adoptees enter their new family reluctantly, or hesitantly, as they may have expectations to someday be turned out. They may also expect to one day return to their birth family. And at the same time, the parents and existing siblings may be entering the adoption process with feelings of celebration.
Adjustment periods are real. When everyone can go into the adoption with this understanding — adjusting expectations to match reality — the adjustment usually goes much better.
