Hi there! We’re Jim and David and we are honored to be included in this personal time in your life. We know you’re making a brave, caring, and selfless choice to help a couple who is not able to have children on their own. Should you choose us, we want you to know that this child will grow up with parents who will love and cherish them just as much as you do, in a home full of unconditional love and joy. We put this book together with the hope that it helps you with your adoption decision. We’d love to share a bit about who we are, how we met, our family, and our home. We hope this book will be our first steps with you on a beautiful and lasting new journey together. Thank you for taking an interest in us as adoptive parents! Let's get started!

We’ve been married for six years and together as a couple for nine years. We went on our first date at a burger joint in Chicago in 2016, and right away, we felt a strong and special connection. David really liked that Jim loved the opera, played the piano, and was super smart (he was teaching Game Theory and advanced math at the time at a university). Jim was drawn to David’s charm, his work as an actor, and his love of adventure. That first date started what has become nearly a decade of a fun, happy, and loving life together. We talked for hours about our shared love of the outdoors, the performing arts, travel, and most of all, family!

Our first big trip was to Hong Kong, and we were so thrilled to find someone else who liked to explore the world with curiosity and happiness. Jim had been to Hong Kong for work before and was excited to show David his favorite spots and discover new places together. David surprised Jim (and a lot of people there!) by learning some Cantonese, which made the trip even more fun and easy. Since that first trip, we’ve traveled to more than twelve other countries. We love to travel and can’t wait to show your child all the amazing places in the world!

After dating for a few years, we knew we had found not just our soulmate, but our best friend too. We got married on a rooftop in Chicago with all our extended family and friends around us. David surprised Jim by learning to play the guitar and singing a song during the ceremony. We opted for pie instead of a traditional cake and honored our families’ legacies of secret recipes by serving them all: pecan pie, key lime pie, apple pie, and bourbon chocolate pie! The day was perfect, with lots of fun dancing, delicious food, and so much love. We had always felt lucky to find each other, but after such a perfect celebration, it really felt like something bigger than us was blessing our relationship. As our marriage officiant put it, “As a pianist, Jim's instrument is often mathematical in style. Then we have David's vocal line. Both of these individual melodies could continue making music in this world solo and do great things, but how much more rich will this music be when joined together?”

After we got married, we moved from Chicago to the suburbs of Washington, DC. Jim had just completed his PhD in Economics and started a new job for a research company. David successfully shifted his acting career and was nominated for several local acting awards in his first year. Then, when the pandemic closed the theaters, David put his other talents to work. We bought a townhouse by a lake, and David worked hard to fix up the bathrooms, kitchen, and outdoor area all by himself. And while we loved that home by the lake, when Jim was offered a great new job in New York City, we were so excited to be closer to friends and families. Now, we’re finally exactly where we’re supposed to be! We live in Jersey City, New Jersey and our home has an incredible view of the New York City skyline, lots of families, parks and playgrounds, and great schools. We’re only five train stops to the best restaurants and Broadway shows in Times Square (yay fun!) and only three blocks from a Target (yay diapers!). We’ve found the best of both worlds!

Since we moved to Jersey, Jim has really enjoyed being close to city life again. He grew up in Connecticut and used to visit New York City every week for advanced math and science classes. After high school, Jim moved to Chicago for college where he studied physics. Then, he went to Barcelona, Spain, to get his Masters before going back to Chicago to finish his PhD in Economics which means that he is officially called Doctor (though his mom got him a shirt that said, “Not THAT kind of doctor!”). Even though Jim might sound like a big "nerd," he’s also a fun, smart, and curious person! He loves collecting cookbooks from all the countries he visits and making those meals for us at home. He also enjoys reading, playing the piano, biking, and checking out the cool museums and restaurants in New York City. There is always a lot of music in our home and David loves to sing along when Jim is playing piano!

David is also excited to be back in the city. He grew up in Kentucky and then got his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre at a university in Florida. After school, he toured the country in Grease, the Musical! for a year before moving to New York City to become a professional actor. Later, David moved to Chicago to get his Master’s degree in Acting. He has worked all over the country as an actor, singer, and director, and even won awards! David’s favorite part of being an artist is making people happy through storytelling. Acting has always been a big part of David’s life, but he also loves trying new things. David enjoys a fancy meal, jogging, doing yoga, and learning the language of the next place we visit together. He has always felt that learning a few words in another language is a powerful way to show respect for someone else’s home and to understand a little about their unique story.

Our Son, Henry

Henry is such a loving, happy, and gentle soul and we know he’s going to be a wonderful big brother!

David, Jim, and Henry at the beach
We are lucky to have a strong partnership, a big, accepting family, and great friends. And we had always dreamed that, after getting married, we’d have two kids to share these blessings with. We grew up with brothers and know the importance of having a life-long bond with your siblings. We started the adoption process after our honeymoon and were blessed to adopt our son Henry more than two years ago. When he was born, our lives changed for the better in an instant. We were lucky enough to meet Henry’s birth mom when she was pregnant with Henry. We got to know each other over the phone and then in person so she could really know us and trust us with her child. We feel blessed to be able to keep in touch with Henry’s birth family and we would love to keep in touch with you as well.

Henry is a hilarious, strong-willed, and happy two-year-old. He loves to climb anything he can, whether it’s at home, at the playground, or in his little gymnastics class. As he’s learning to count, he tells us when it’s time to play hide and seek, and the game always ends with the three of us rolling around and laughing. Henry loves to draw, play with Play-Doh, build houses with his magnet tiles, and help us cook meals. He loves all kinds of music, from classical to rock to pop, but especially anything he can dance to. Henry is going to be the perfect age to teach all these fun things to a younger sibling!

David (or has Henry calls him, Dada) loves being a stay-at-home Dad and is thankful that theater allows him to focus on family and go back to work when the kids are both in school. Jim (or Baba, Greek for dad) does an incredible job providing for his family and cherishes that special moment every day when Henry runs into his arms after coming home from work. We’ve seen great benefits from taking Henry to morning preschool a few days a week. It’s been amazing to watch him take developmental leaps as he discovers his own interests and skills while playing so well with his awesome new friends. Henry is such a loving, happy, and gentle soul and we know he’s going to be a wonderful big brother!
Our Family, Our Home, and Our Life of Fun and Adventure

Henry has been welcomed into both great big families with joy and love and he's already having a blast joining us on all our family adventures!

Four generations of David's family at Christmas
Part of the reason we know Henry is going to be such a great big brother is because he’s already spent so much time with other kids! We both come from big families and our brothers and cousins all have kids of their own. Henry has been welcomed into the great big family just as any new member and already has a special connection with his grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. Never for a second has anyone ever treated Henry any differently than any other kid. Both of our families are just happy that he makes us so happy and they’re over the moon that we’re hoping to add another bundle of joy!

Jim has two younger brothers who are both married. Mike and Lisa have a daughter named Juniper who is a year younger than Henry, and Nick and Chelsea just got married last year! He also has a huge extended family of six aunts and uncles and nine cousins. His family shares a love of sports (especially hockey, Go Sabers!), music by the Grateful Dead, and getting together for big Christmas celebrations. Now that they’re retired, Jim’s parents visit several times a year and love to shower Henry with gifts. Yiayia (Greek for grandma) is a huge help to us as parents because she used to be a kindergarten teacher and has great advice for ways to make learning fun! Grandpa Chris is always making Henry laugh!

David has a big family too! He also has two younger brothers who are also married with kids: Michael and Jennifer (Natalie and Evan) and Stephen and Leslie (Alexandra and Nicole). David's family loves watching sports, traveling, and spending time together. His grandparents used to plan a big beach vacation every summer for over 30 years so everyone could stay close. Now that his grandparents have passed, David’s parents have continued that legacy by organizing summer vacations to different places every year. Everyone’s favorite place to visit is the lake house in Florida, where David’s grandma grew up. We have a motor boat, a sail boat, and best of all, it’s close to Disney World! Grammy and Grampy love to teach Henry to swim and can’t wait to teach the new member of the family.

Now that we’re living so close to New York City, we are closer to some of our greatest friends again. Jim’s best friend from college and her husband, Caroline and Javier, have become Henry’s Tia and Tio (aunt and uncle in Spanish) and love to take Henry around the city and even babysit sometimes so that the dads can get a night off! We’re also closer to David’s best friends, Mark and Wes, who have two adopted boys, Avery and Caleb, so our kids all have adoption in common. Raising kids with such a beautiful tapestry of friends and chosen family is a dream come true for us as parents. We know that our next child has an amazing life waiting for them here!

Our home has been a great fit for us so far but there is room for one more! We have three bedrooms so each child can have his or her own room. Henry loves to watch the boats, the trains, and the helicopters from our living room. Right across the street, there’s a playground with a splash pad and a carousel. There’s also a boardwalk that goes all along the river. Henry has made so many great friends in the neighborhood and there’s always something fun to do nearby!

When we want to explore beyond our neighborhood, we love to take Henry into the city to visit the zoo, museums, or Central Park. He gets a kick out of seeing the animals and is always fascinated watching all the people, too. But we also enjoy sharing our love for travel with Henry. Whether it's the beach in Barbados or riding double-decker buses in London, Henry really seems to enjoy seeing the world and hearing new accents and languages. One of the best things about being a parent is giving your child the experiences you wish you could have had when you were a kid!

We’ve also enjoyed showing Henry cities in the U.S. where his aunts, uncles, and cousins live. We usually travel for the holidays and we have loved including Henry in our family traditions. Whether it’s the fun Greek Easter egg games with YiaYia, making over 100 pecan pies with Grammy, or watching the Fourth of July fireworks all together at the Florida lake house, wherever we go, there’s always fun to be had! Of course, there’s no place like home and our first Christmas in New York City was extra special last year. We took Henry to see the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, and he was completely amazed by the whole show! That will be a new tradition for sure!
You are the greatest blessing we’ll ever know

We may be two dads, but your child will only ever have one mom: You.

Celebrating with the cousins at Jim's brother's wedding in Texas
In our first two years as dads, we have learned so much about being parents, about the best ways to take care of a child, and about the adoption process. We’re ready to take everything we’ve learned and use it to be even better parents for a second child. These kids deserve to grow up in a big, loving family, but most of all, they deserve to have each other as friends and companions their whole lives. We know that Henry is going to be a great big brother, and your child will always have a playmate, someone to ride in the back of the car with, explore the world, celebrate birthdays, Christmas, graduations, weddings, and so much more. It’s so important to us as parents that we help our kids feel proud of their adoption and their family. They will always know they have parents who love them no matter what, and a sibling who will always be there for them.

We may be two dads, but this child will only ever have one mom: You. We’ve been through the adoption journey before, and we hope we can use what we’ve learned to make our connection with you positive, loving, and full of care. It’s completely up to you how much you’d like to stay in touch. We send Henry’s mom pictures and updates every month, just as she likes. We’d be happy to share as much or as little with you as you’d like. But, no matter how much you want to be involved, this child will always know their true story: that they were brought into this world by people who love them deeply. Without you, our family and your child’s life wouldn’t be possible.
We cannot thank you enough for reading this and considering us to be your child’s adoptive parents. We truly love being parents and hope you will join us in our beautiful, modern family. When we first held Henry, we knew we had been given a special gift, but we also knew that there was someone else waiting to meet us, too. You would be giving us the greatest gift of all, and we promise to repay you by giving your child a life of endless love and joy. Every person's story is as special as they are, and we can’t wait to nurture this child with love, joy, adventure, creativity, and discovery. We are so thankful for the blessings we’ve received in life, and we can’t wait to share those blessings with the person who will make our family truly complete.

We’d love to hear from you so please call, text, or email at 914-200-1880 or davidandjimadopt@gmail.com.

We also have a wonderful, supportive, caring, and experienced adoption attorney named Rebecca Mendel who can answer your questions. Please feel free to ask us for her contact information and we can put you in touch with her at your convenience.

Thank you so much.

With all our love,
David and Jim, Dada and Baba
