About Us

Every step in our journey has lead us to this point.

In early 2013, after a typical first five years of marriage, we were thrilled to find out we were pregnant. That pregnancy took us on a journey we never expected, but have learned to cherish. Our son Ethan was born with a severe heart defect that devastatingly took his life within 90 minutes of his birth. We love him so much and will forever hold him in our hearts as part of our family. If you are interested in learning more about Ethan, we used this blog (ourhlhsbaby.blogspot.com) to keep family and friends updated on his well-being. About Jeff

Hard working, goofy, and thoughtful.

Jeff can recall facts I told him on our first date. He never forgets!
Jeff works hard to provide for our family by managing treasury projects for his company. The last three years he has been in school earning his MBA at night and studying for the CTP (Certified Treasury Professional) exam, which he passed in December! He is now enjoying some much needed free time after work, which he uses to serve in his church calling, research his next culinary feat, and try his hand at wood carving. Some of Jeff’s favorite things include raspberry hot chocolate, Star Wars Legos, cooking, and making people laugh.
About Laura

Caring, creative, and organized.

Laura likes to collect new hobbies. She is always wanting to learn new things!
Laura stays busy by working full time as a literacy specialist in an elementary school. After 10 years as a classroom teacher, she made the shift to working specifically with struggling readers in kindergarten, first, and second grades. She absolutely loves her job! In her free time she likes to make quilts, learn new crafty hobbies, and serve in her church calling. She also learned a little bit about gardening last summer and looks forward to another successful gardening season this year! Some of Laura’s favorite things include outdoor concerts, Hobby Lobby, reading, and cats.
Thank you!

The purpose of faith is not to change God's will, but to empower us to act on God's will. -Elder Uchtdorf

Life has not taken us in a direction we could have predicted, but we trust that we are being watched-over and protected every step of the way.
We have so much hope for a future family. Faith is an integral part of our lives and we know God is in every detail. We know He has been guiding us through every step in our journey and hope you know that He is guiding you as well. We want to commend you for considering adoption placement for your child and look forward to getting to know you. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us!

Favorites

Laura's Favorite Animal: Cats. She fully admits she'd be a crazy cat lady if she had no self control. She limits herself to two cats at home and is crazy about them.
Jeff's Favorite Office Decor: Star Wars Legos. He gets a new set from the Ultimate Collector Series about once a year and has them displayed in his home office.
Laura's Favorite Thing: Anything crafty. She can often be found wandering the aisles of Hobby Lobby looking for a new project.
Jeff's Favorite Thing: Raspberry Hot Chocolate. All year-round. The bigger the mug, the better.
Laura's Favorite Outing: A good concert. Bonus points if it's outside in the warm summer evening or at Red Rocks.
Favorite Place to Find Peace: The Temple. We currently have a goal to go 23 times in 2023.
Laura's Favorite Hobby: Quilting. She's watched her mom sew her whole life, but was never interested until a few years after we got married. Now she spends all of her free time in her sewing room.
Jeff's Favorite Hobby: Cooking. He doesn't like to follow recipes, he loves to create his own. He's always dreaming up his next culinary adventure!
Favorite Prank: Jeff wrapped up this shirt in his parents' wrapping paper and labeled it, "To Jeff. From Mom & Dad." Then he opened it Christmas morning at their house. He has 3 other siblings, so it got a good laugh!
Favorite Winter Trip: Kauai, Hawaii. We escaped the cold and the snow over the holidays last year and loved every minute!
Favorite Summer Activity: We love going to baseball games every summer. It's nice that the Rockies are close, but Jeff's heart will always beat for the SF Giants.
Favorite Summer Trip: Every year we go to visit Laura's parents in Ohio and have Quilt Camp. Laura and her mom sew and quilt all day and Jeff is the Camp Cook!
Favorite Tradition: We started collecting magnets on our Honeymoon and now we have three boards full of all the places we've been.

Melinda Humphrey (Friend)

I have had the privilege of knowing Laura not only as a friend, but also a colleague. We have been friends for almost a decade and have worked together for approximately five years. Laura has such a love and passion for helping children. Being a teacher, I get to see this up close on a daily basis. The care and concern that she has for our students is on display everyday. We constantly have conversations about how to help students grow academically and socially along with the true joy they bring us by being the tiny humans that they are. Both Laura and Jeff have always been there to support my own children through their academic and extracurricular activities. They are always asking about my kids and wanting to know how they are doing and what they are up to. Laura has even attended my girls’ volleyball matches and they both were there when my oldest graduated high school. Their willingness to support others is simply amazing. They put everyone before themselves and are there to lend a helping hand when needed. As a couple they have been on the toughest journey with the loss of their son, Ethan, yet continue to remain positive about one day raising children and creating a family of their own. Their strong relationship and marriage are built on the core values of their faith which guide them to be amazing individuals and a perfect couple to raise a family. They have a lot of love to give and will be amazing parents. If you choose Jeff and Laura, you can be guaranteed that your child will grow up in a home that is full of love, support, and in an environment that will give them the opportunity to learn and grow. I hope that you strongly consider this amazing couple as their hearts are open and ready to expand their family!

Jeff and Laura Kirk and two of the kindest people I know. They willingly sacrifice time, talent and effort on behalf of those within the community. Whenever there is a need, the Kirk's are always among the first to arrive on the scene to provide help and support. They have so much love to give and know that any child that joins their family will be given every ounce of love, support and encouragement they need.

Laura and I have been friends for 7 years and is a light in my life! She is fun, thoughtful, generous, and hard working. I am always inspired by her organizational skills! We work together often on quilting and crafting projects. She is patient and willing to share her expertise and knowledge with me. When she is here, my kids all want to talk to her and tell her about their lives. She is always excited for what they are doing in their lives and asks questions to learn more. She cares deeply about those in her life and strives to support and love them. Jeff is fun to be around and is a fabulous chef. He is thoughtful and easy to talk to. He is smart and dedicated to learning new things in both his personal and professional life. Jeff and Laura will welcome a child into their home with love!

Friday Night Dates

Friday night dates have become part of our weekly routine. Even though we don’t have kids at home we feel the busyness of life pulling us in many different directions throughout the week. In January of 2020 we made a commitment to have a weekly date night where all of our attention is with one another. We put “Date Night” as a recurring event in our shared calendar as a placeholder and reminder. As events and ideas come up for things we want to do together, we put them into our date night time slot. If Friday night comes around and we don’t have any plans, we usually pick a restaurant and watch a movie at home. Some of our favorite dates are double dates with friends, game nights, or going to watch a sporting event. This is us last Friday night at the Colorado Mammoths indoor lacrosse game.

How We Met

Let’s go back to 2007, a time when iPods were brand new, cell phones were meant to be flipped, and Beyonce ran the world. Laura was technically a student at BYU, but was spending her days as an intern 2nd Grade teacher in Heber City, Utah. Jeff was just home from his 2-year proselytizing mission in Arizona and starting his first semester back at BYU. He lived with his brother who was engaged to a friend of Laura’s. One day, Laura’s friend invited her on a blind date with her fiance and “his younger brother.” We went to a fireside at the Marriott Center and it was fine. The second date is where the magic really happened. Going ice skating and having ice cream at The Malt Shop on University Avenue led us to realize that we had a lot in common and wanted to spend more time together. The rest, as they say, is history.

Ethan's Story

One important part of our story is Ethan. His life blessed us in more ways than we could imagine. After 6 months of fertility treatments, we learned that we were expecting in January of 2013. At our 20 week anatomy scan, we learned that our baby boy had a severe heart defect known as HLHS. We worked through the treatment plan and felt confident that we could handle whatever came our way. Six weeks later we learned of another complication in Ethan’s anatomy that gave him a 5% chance to live. We began to prepare and pray for our hearts to have the strength to handle what was coming. Ethan was born on his due date, September 30, and rushed into surgery to try and save his life. After 90 minutes, he returned to heaven. We don’t know why God let us have Ethan for such a short time, but we do know that his life greatly deepened our relationship with God and gave us a glimpse into the love a parent has for their child. We are grateful for our angel in heaven and for how his life has shaped ours.

Growing up in Washington near extended family, her favorite memories are going boating on the river and swimming in Grandma’s pool. Her siblings are spread across three different states now, with her parents in rural Ohio. She loves to visit and experience a slower-paced life every summer.

Growing up in California on an apricot orchard, his favorite memories were playing outside on sunny days and watching movies on rainy days. Hi there!

We’ve been married for 15 years and love living life together! We are hoping to grow our family through adoption to have our home filled with even more love. We plan to raise our children with strong faith in God and love and respect for others. We have one biological son in heaven. Ethan was born full-term with a severe heart defect called HLHS. He went back to heaven shortly after birth. His life greatly deepened our relationship with God and gave us a glimpse into the love a parent has for their child. We’ve lived in our home in Colorado for 11 years. It is in a welcoming neighborhood with an elementary school, park, and church nearby. We enjoy taking walks on the paths and trying local restaurants. Weekly date nights are a consistent piece of our weekly routine. If we aren’t at the movies or a new restaurant, you can find us at a sporting event or concert. When we’re home, Jeff loves to cook and Laura loves to sew. We definitely don’t know what you are going through or what is on your mind as you consider placing a child for adoption, but we do promise to honor you and whatever decision is best for you and your child. God is with you. He loves you. We definitely know that.
