What would you do if you lived many decades only to find out that you are a different race than you had been raised to believe? That happened to Verda Byrd. Adopted at birth by black parents, it wasn’t until she was 70 years old that she learned that her birth parents were both white.
Byrd said it was the search for her adoption records that led her to the truth. Her parents took the knowledge to their graves. Not that it’s made a difference into how Verda would live her life. But the shock, after seven decades of believing she was black, has made her hyper-critical of Rachel Dolezal.
