Mitchell and Leslee Kleckley, a couple from Texas, know that some eyebrows may rise when they talk of their embryo adoption. But for them, it was the best choice to create a family. After being married for three years, the couple knew they might not be able to conceive. As they explored various options — with adoption being one choice — they learned about embryo adoption.
The couple is spiritual and religious, with Mitchell being the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lovelady. They believe that God is leading their lives and knows what is best for them. They also believe that life begins at conception. So when they were made aware of embryo adoption, their hearts naturally turned to these children-to-be, who would be kept in endless frozen storage unless adopted.
There are currently more than 400,000 frozen embryos in clinics around the United States. These are embryos from couples who chose in vitro fertilization (IVF) as a means to conceive, and have completed their treatments. Most of these couples are content with the size of their families, and so have chosen to participate in the embryo adoption program with the fertilized eggs that are left.
The happy ending of this story is the successful pregnancy and eventual birth at a Houston hospital for Mitchell and Leslee. Little Drew was born around Thanksgiving and the couple is thankful indeed! Their full story may be read at the Christian Examiner.
