On the approach of Mother’s Day this year Australian radio DJ host, Ryan Jon took the internet by storm. He released a tearful video message to his biological mother whom he had never met. He expressed how incredibly thankful he is that she chose life for him and that he ended up with such a caring family. Ryan would love to have a reunion if for nothing more than to thank her in person. He acknowledged that the adoption system is not perfect, but he believes that the positives outweigh the negatives.
News.com.au recently interviewed Ryan. He told them the story of how he was adopted at six weeks of age by his adoptive mother, Mandy. She raised him as her own child, and he will always think of her as his real mum. He loves her very much. When asked if he had successfully made contact with his birth mother, he explained that all of the emails he received have actually been a hindrance. Her name is Julie, and he has had 78 emails from Julies. None of which has produced any solid leads. Messages from cousins, brothers, or siblings could be lost in the sea of correspondence. He’s still slowly making his way through the fray. An inquiry into his medical history revealed an irregular heartbeat. One the doctors are hoping does not correlate to a family history of heart problems. Hopefully one day he will learn more.
Since the release of the video, Ryan has been inundated with emails from all over the world. Of course everyone has an opinion–they always do. And while most of the feedback has been positive, there has been no shortage of hateful messages as well. Reaching the whole world via social media can be a huge help when hoping for a reunion, but it comes with a price. Privacy can be a high cost. Was it worth it? Only time will tell.
