“Mrs. D” made the promise to herself to step in and help children, including foster children, after she witnessed the verbal and emotional abuse of a foster child in another woman’s care. And so, once Mrs. D retired, she began taking girls into her home.
Mrs. D has taken in the tougher kids: “I take the runaways. I take the prostitutes. I’ve walked under the 105 (freeway) looking for my girls. I’ve went in gang infested areas.” It is her love of people and desire to help everyone have a good chance at success in life that has motivated Mrs. D to help 144 foster girls in her care.
