Located on 23 acres of borrowed property, the Rugged Cross Youth Ranch not only rescues animals, but invites foster kids to spend time in the wilderness, too. The ranch is a small non-profit that relies on the support of local businesses and individuals. The community comes together not only to support the daily needs of the ranch, but also to host fundraising events. In January they held their annual Boots & Bling fundraiser which included entertainment by Nashville artist, Tommy Brandt.
On any given day one could find a group of foster kids helping to tend the rescued horses, donkeys, lambs, and goats. Or one may see the kids wandering through the wilderness participating in wrangling, hunting, or fishing.
South Shore News reports that the ranch was begun by a family of six in 2009. After spending some time volunteering at a foster care facility, their hearts were touched and they began the youth ranch. The ranch is always open to young foster children and to kids who have aged out of the system. They will welcome those who need a break away.
