This video provides some amazing insights into adoption in Guatemala. Once upon a time the Guatemala adoption rate was through the roof. Then, through much coercion, UNICEF got Guatemala to implement a law that put international adoptions to a halt.
The goal was to have children adopted within the country. The only problem is that this brought the adoptions down to MAYBE 35 a year. One of the conditions of this law is that the adoptive family is not able to know the child before adoption, and this video touches on why this is a tragedy.
I hope to see an increase in international adoptions from Guatemala and many other countries where orphans are not able to be cared for and loved on due to the sheer amount of children needing help.
